Richtungshörer.

Hello to all :D; something about it.........................

Richtungshörer.

Directional receivers are devices for spatially localizing sound events. They were often called "listening devices" (Horchgeräte). In the First World War they were mainly used for acoustic aerial reconnaissance and, albeit only rarely, in the Second World War to locate enemy aircraft in unclear weather such as fog or darkness. With the invention of radar, the technology became obsolete from around 1940.

The directional receiver was much more suitable for locating aircraft. The principle of the directional receiver was implemented in numerous devices that were used up until the 1930s - as ring funnel directional receivers in the German Wehrmacht even until the end of the Second World War.

In the case of the ring funnel directional receiver, four mechanically connected and cross-arranged hearing funnels were acoustically aligned with the sound source. Using several devices, the true position of a sound source moving relatively slowly in the subsonic range could be determined via cross bearing.

The spatial alignment was carried out using stereo listening - acoustically via a tube without electronic amplification - by one person per vertical and horizontal axis. The range of approximately five to twelve kilometers was very dependent on the prevailing weather conditions, the engine volume of the aircraft to be targeted, the background noise from the environment and the hearing ability of the person deployed.

In August 1944, according to a list by the Quartermaster General of the Luftwaffe, Lieutenant General Dietrich von Criegern, 5,559 ring funnel directional receivers were still in use.
