Hello to all :D; something more........................

German U Boats in Spanish waters in 1937-1939.

U 34 was a German U boat Type VII A, which served with the Ubootwaffe in the Kriegsmarine.

The order for the boat was allocated on March 25, 1935 at the Germania shipyard in Kiel. The keel was laid on September 15, 1935, the launch took place on July 17, 1936 being commisioned under Kplt. Ernst Sobe on September 12, 1936.

The boat was within the framework of the U-Flotilla "Saltzwedel" in Wilhelmshaven as combat ready/front boat. She carried out two secret operations in the Spanish Civil War (Ursula Nov/Dec 1936 and Jagdausflug Jun7Jul 1937) and sank the Spanish Submarine C-3 under Kplt. Harald Grosse on December 12, 1936. From April 1937 to May 1937 she fulfilled maritime surveillance off the Azores and from October 1937 to December 1937 in Spanish and Portuguese waters.

The U boat carried out diving and convoy exercises from April to May 1939 in the Atlantic between Portugal and the Azores.

Hello to all :D; something more........................

Operation "Jagdausflug" (hunting trip).

AFAIK German submarines conducted two covert operations during the civil war, one of them was the well-known Operation Ursula (November/December 1936) and the other Operation Jagdausflug (June / July 1937). In the latter period they were present in Spanish waters the U 28; U 33; U 34 and U 35 and to my knowledge the first three took part in the operation.

This operation took place because on June 15, 1937 a new incident had exacerbated the Germans minds; this time off the coast of Algeria, 25 nautical miles north of Oran, the German light cruiser "Leipzig" was attacked with four torpedoes, but all missed the target. In protest Germany and Italy decided to withdraw temporarily from the international naval patrolling. For the Kriegsmarine the case was clear: Konteradmiral von Fischel, at that time serving as the local naval commander, prepared a new secret action with the submarines. Operating in three areas in the Mediterranean where German submarines were not allowed to stop, before Cartagena and on the Algerian coast, they should sink all "red" submarines. Before crossing the Strait of Gibraltar the U 28, U 33 and U 34 received a coat of paint on their numerals and signs of neutrality. In this operation, Fischel wanted to try the new electric torpedoes, but for unknown reasons the OKM did not approve the plan. The operation took place until mid-July of that year and of course they did not find any "red" submarines.
