Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 C a destroyer fighter for the blitzkrieg.

The Aircraft Acquisition Order No. 8, dated August 15, 1938, specified that 990 Messerschmitt Bf-110 C aircraft should be delivered to first line units as of January 1939. This aircraft would comprise the backbone of the equipment plan of the Luftwaffe in the period between the autumn of 1938 and the spring of 1942. According to this plan the Luftwaffe would be equipped with 16 groups of destroyer fighters, of which half would fly with the Bf-110 and the other half with the Me-210, but due to the shortage of raw materials this plan could never be fulfilled. These aircraft were considered as an offensive weapon and their role was to clear the airspace and escort the bombers, while the single-engine fighters would have the role of securing domestic airspace.

The Bf-110C was the first version of the Bf-110 to be equipped with Daimler Benz engines. After the failure of the DB 600 project, the C series was built around two DB 601A engines, capable of providing 1,100 hp. This increased the speed of the aircraft to 349 mph at 22,295 feet, and at least gave it the opportunity to fulfill its intended function. The result was an airplane that could surpass almost all the Allied fighters in altitude, but to the altitudes that it had to operate to protect to the bombers it would demonstrate to be more and more vulnerable to the British and later American fighter planes.

Together with the new engines already mentioned, this aircraft was aerodynamically cleaner, the radiators were taken out of the engine nacelles and moved to the lower panels of the wing ends to compensate for the increase in the weight of the engines. The exhaust pipes were located on the outside of the gondolas and directed upwards to prevent the gases from coming into contact with the refrigerators. It had a fixed tail wheel and changes were made to the main landing gear in such a way as to allow it to be stowed flush in the gondolas.

The first Bf-110 C that left the factory had rounded wing ends, while the later models had square ends that increased the speed of level flight. The wingspan was reduced to 624 mm which increased the wing load from 147 to 153 kg / m2, of course this reduced maneuverability. At cruise speed it took 18 seconds to complete a full circle with the level plane, but at full speed it took about 30 seconds. There was also an increase in the load of the control surfaces, with 20 kg in the ailerons and 30 kg in the elevators. The maximum speed of diving was 700 k / h (due to the low resistance of the wing).

At medium speed the airplane responded well and was comfortable to fly and with quick reaction, stable to turns and did not tend to fall into a corkscrew easily. But this changed totally at low speed and the control surfaces required a great effort to displace them to their maximum deflection. Although it was possible to fly with a single engine, landing in that condition was quite difficult and even with the maximum displacement of the rudder, the asymmetric forces could not be counteracted.

The Messerschmitt Bf-110 C-1 was the first production version of the C series. It had the DB 601A engine, 1,100 hp, and was armed with four MG 17 machine guns and two MG FF guns in the nose, and a single machine gun MG 15 in the observer's cockpit. Delivered to the test unit in January 1939 and to the frontline units during the spring and summer of 1939. It participated in the Polish campaign. At the beginning of the war there were 23 Bf-110 B-1 and 59 Bf-110 C-1 in the units of destroyers of the Luftwaffe .....................

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 C a destroyer fighter for the blitzkrieg.

Already initiated the conflict, in September of 1939, Messerschmitt began with the production of the Bf-110 C-2. The only variant with respect to the previous model Bf-110 C-1 was the installation of a new FuG X radio equipment in replacement of the FuG IIIa / U and modification of the antenna arrangement. In the Bf-110 C-2 there was only a single cable from the antenna mast to the end of the tail to port. A total of 359 Bf-110 C-2 aircraft were built; 134 between September 1939 and January 1940 by Focke-Wulf, 95 from January to March of 1940 by Gotha and 77 between May and July of 1940 by MIAG.

Approximately 20 Bf-110 C-3 aircraft are mentioned in the reports and lists of casualties of the RLM, however all of them have serial numbers assigned to the Bf-110 C-1 model since they are aircraft of this type that were optimized with the new 20 mm MG FF / M cannon instead of the old MG FF. The new type of weapon had a higher rate of fire, 680 rounds per minute instead of the 600 rounds per minute of the previous model.

Initially there were no plans to build a Bf-110 C-4 model and all factories had to be adapted to build the long-range model D-0. However, the decision was changed when it was found that the subcontractors could not comply with the number of additional pumps for the additional tanks required for the Bf-110 D in time. The Bf-110 C-4 left the factories with the new cannon MG FF / M. The C-4 came with the pod collector mounted on the bottom of the central part of the fuselage near the root of the wings. The mount of the MG 15 machine gun to the rear was also modified. A total of 155 Bf-110 C-4 were built (55 by Focke-Wulf, 46 by Gotha and 54 by MIAG)......................

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 C a destroyer fighter for the blitzkrieg.

From June 1940 to January 1941 about 100 Bf-110 C-5 reconnaissance left the Gotha factory. Of those 75 units, went directly to first-line Luftwaffe units. In replacement of the MG FF / M bow barrel, it had a RB 50/30 camera mounted to take photographs at medium height. This model was followed by the Bf-110 C-6 that changed the camera for a ventral pod to carry a 30 mm MK 108 cannon. The Gotha factory built 12 of these units between May and July 1940. The final version of the C series was the Bf-110 C-7 used as a fighter-bomber, being equipped with the ETC 500 rack to transport bombs. Gotha made only 4 units, while 35 were manufactured by MIAG. Other C-7s were not such, but earlier models equipped with the ventral rack ETC 500, these aircraft were designated Bf-110 C-4 / B, but for some reason they were added to the list of the C-7 series. The fighter-bombers carried reinforced tires and a stronger tail wheel to compensate for the increase in weight.....................

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 D a long-range destroyer fighter.

One of the reasons for the construction of this model may be in the letter from Göring to Udet and Milch dated September 20, 1939, stating that the development of the heavy fighter should be done in such a way that it could operate over all of Britain. The first prototype left Messerschmitt for the Rechlin test center on March 26, 1940. The changes proposed by this model were additional fuel tanks, inflatable boat for the crew located in the tail cone that was extended, reinforced struts and larger wheels. It had DB 601 Aa engines with a takeoff power of 1,175 hp (one minute) and a maximum of 1,000 hp at 4,000 meters (5 minutes).

Two versions, R1 and R2, were built, which still received additional fuel tanks. The Rützustand 1 (configuration 1) was a version that had a larger ventral tank of 1,050 liters or Dackelbauch - sausage belly) and 106 liters of oil and two 900-liter drop tanks under the wings. The Rüstzustand 2 had two 900-liter fuel tanks under the wings and an additional tank of 75 liters of oil under the fuselage near the root of the wings but not ventral tank.

The first 83 Bf-110 D-0 / R1 aircraft were built between March and September 1940 by Messerschmitt AG. Focke Wulf delivered its first Bf-110 D-0 on July 28, 1940 and the last 33 on August 31, 1940. A modification of this version was the Bf-110 D-0 / B that replaced the ventral fuel tank by two bombs rack ETC 500. In the following months 13 Bf-110 D-0 were converted to the D-0 / B version .............

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 D a long-range destroyer fighter.

At first it was thought to designate the reconnaissance version as Bf-110 D-1 but then it was designated as D-4, while the D-1 was for the long-range destroyer, this designation was only used by the RLM and applied for Bf-110 D-0 aircraft manufactured by Focke Wulf that did not have a Dackelbauch installation.

Some 73 aircraft of the Bf-110 D-2 series manufactured by Messerschmitt AG left the factory with the bomb rack ETC 500 already installed, but as the fuel lines were left intact, the ground staff of the units then had the option to remove the ETC 500 rack and replace it with a ventral fuel tank. Due to the little existence of 900 liter detachable tanks, many airplanes only carried one additional fuel tank in the ventral zone.

Some 21 Bf-110 D-2/N were equipped with the new DB-601 N engine capable of delivering 1,275 hp at takeoff (one minute). The first test flight of a Bf-110 C-2 with DB-601 N engines took place in July 1940. This engine had a higher compression ratio and required fuel with 98 octane instead of 87 octane as its predecessors. This caused logistical problems for the units that received aircraft with the new engines. At the end of the autumn of 1940 many airplanes that returned from the factories had the new engines. According to a report dated January 22, 1941 the following versions had received the new engine:

Bf-110 C-1, 4 aircraft; Bf-110 C-4, 40 aircraft; Bf-110 C-5, 12 aircraft; Bf-110 C-7, 14 aircraft; Bf-110 D-0, 18 aircraft and Bf-110 D-3, 28 aircraft.

The Bf-110 D-3 was a version with the rack ETC 500 installed, but without fuel lines to install the additional ventral fuel tank. It was the largest of the versions with 274 units manufactured (Messerschmitt AG with 16, MIAG with 70 and Focke Wulf with 168). In theory this version could carry two bombs of 1000 kg SC 1000, but the tests carried out in Rechlin showed that the wheels were unusable after seven take-offs / landings (one Bf-110 D-0 showed 2 mm wear after seven landings), the bomb load was reduced to two 500 kg or one 1000 kg bombs.

Hello to all :D; thanks Prosper . More.........................

The Bf-110 E a multipurpose airplane.

The new version E was a development from the subtype D. Messerschmitt AG started production of the Bf-110 E-1 in August 1940. It was thought that it could fulfill missions either as a bomber or long-range heavy fighter based on a modification of subtype D-2. To increase the precision in the bombardment, a Revi C / 12D scope was added, which allowed precise guidance in hollow dives. The new mount of the MG 15 was lighter and allowed the use of the weapon even with the rear dome closed, although with a smaller field of fire. It was decided to replace the seats used by the gunner with a lighter one with a harness to be used during takeoff / landing.

The tail wheel was improved to reduce vibrations by using a triangular fork, which prevented an uncontrollable swing during a takeoff with a lot of load. The small L-shaped pitot tube below the right wing was replaced by a right tube mounted on the leading edge of the right wing. Because several Bf-110s were increasingly used as night fighters, certain modifications were made that allowed them to operate at higher altitudes for a longer period of time. The oxygen supply was expanded from 8 to 12 bottles and a heating system was installed in the cabin. A new Siemens K 4ü autopilot system would help in navigation. One characteristic of the E and subsequent versions was the rectangular air intake located in the nose with the air being conducted through heaters.

The first batch of 40% of Bf-110 E-1 were equipped with a Dackelbauch installation and the remaining 60% were equipped only with auxiliary tanks under the wings. The Dackelbauch system fell into disuse following Hitler's directive to equip the Bf-110 as bombers. To compensate for the increase in weight, the wheels were again reinforced and equipped with larger tires, 935x343 for the main train and 465x165 for the rear wheel. Between August 1940 and August 1941, 334 Bf-110 E-1 were produced exclusively by Messerschmitt AG.

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 E a multipurpose airplane.

In October 1940 the production of the Bf-110 E-2 fighter-bomber began. The only difference between this new version and the previous one was the absence of fuel lines for the auxiliary ventral tank. A total of 322 units were built (30 - Messerschmitt AG, 61 - Gotha, 210 - MIAG, 21 - Focke Wulf).

The last of the E series was the long reconnaissance aircraft Bf-110 E-3. The fuselage was identical to that of the E-2 version. A Rb 50/30 camera was installed in place of the bombs rack ETC 500 and the MG FF / M cannon. Four supports for bombs of 50 kg were left under the wings. Gotha built 200 units of this series between February and October 1941.

In the E series, additional shielding was installed directly from the factory. For the Bf-110 E-1 two variants were envisaged, in the first additional armor was installed in the nose, under the seats of the pilot and gunner and additional bulletproof glass in the front dome (Rüstzustand 1) and the other it included additional armor under the crew seats (Rüstzustand 3). The variants planned for the Bf-110 E-2 were named Rüstzustand 2 and 4 respectively.

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 E a multipurpose airplane.

Special versions of the Bf-110 C - E.

A certain number of aircraft planned to operate in the Mediterranean were provided with "tropical" modifications such as: dust filters for engines and bow weapons, sun filters on the front windscreens, additional first aid equipment (including food, water and a short-barreled hunting rifle) and larger oil coolers. This version was designated as Bf-110 E-2 Trop.

On January 30, 1941, the Luftwaffe Quartermaster General ordered that six Bf-110 E-1s be delivered to the XI Air Corps to be used as tugs for the giant transport glider Me-321. The first flight of the Me-321 V1 took place on March 8, 1941, at which time it was towed by three Bf-110 E-1s. As of May 15, 1941, the Hanson factory in Schneidemühl began to convert 24 Bf-110 E-1 to transform them into tugplanes of the mentioned glider. For this the planes were removed its armor, fuel tanks monts and some of their weapons. The tow line ran along the fuselage below the tail made firm to a shackle underneath it. Because the engines would be working under heavy loads at low speed and for long periods, "tropical" coolers were installed to avoid overheating. Mirrors were also added to the cockpit. The autonomy of the aircraft was 450 km. In the spring of 1942 this "troika" (three) was replaced by the Heinkel He-111 Z. The denomination that received this model was Bf-110 E-1 / U1 or Bf-110 E-2 / U1.

Another invention was the special transport containers, known as "Dobbas" that were suspended under the fuselage of the Bf-110. The capacity of it was of 900 kg and it reduced the speed of the airplane in about 70 k / h. The maximum flight time with the container was two hours, which allowed transfers of up to 600 km. The stall speed was 170 k/h and it was not possible to fly with a single motor, in case of failure the container had to be ejected.

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 E a multipurpose airplane.

The Bf-110 F - New engines.

The production of the Bf-110 E should have ended in the autumn of 1941 and by that time it should be serviceable the new Me-210, but the tests of this last plane took longer than expected so the RML decided to continue with another sub -type, the Bf-110 F at the end of September 1941. The F series used a new engine the DB 601F that produced higher rpm and had an improved supercharger. It delivered 1,350 hp during the takeoff (one minute) 1,200 hp maximum at 4,900 meters (30 minutes) and 1,000 nominal hp. The engines propelled VDM-VS propellers with blades of 3.4 meters in diameter. The covers around the engines were redesigned. The spinners of the propellers were more aerodynamic and the tropical oil coolers were used in the airplane. A shock bar was installed behind the pilot's seat and the instrument panel was changed and oil pressure valves were mounted on the upper fuselage of the engine nacelles. The radio system included the FuG X, FuG 25, Peil GV and FuBl 1. The armament was similar to those of the Bf-110 E-1, except that the tail gunner had a new mount for the 7.92 mm double machine gun MG 81Z.

Subsequent versions of the Bf-110 F were as follows. Rüstzatz B1: additional dorsal oil tank of 75 liters. Rüstzatz B2: two ejectables fuel tanks of 300 or 900 liters under the wings. Rüstzatz M1: with two guns of 20 mm MG 151/20 with 200 projectiles each one below the fuselage to bow. Rüstzatz M2: with two ETC 500 racks under the fuselage. Rüstzatz M3: with two ETC 50 racks under the wings. Rüstzatz M4: with two racks 24 SD 2 / XII for fragmentation bombs under each wing.

The first 5 pre-production aircraft built by Gotha between December 1941 and January 1942 were sent to Rechlin. A total of 190 Bf-110 F-2s were built between March and November 1942 by Luther, a sister company of MIAG. Between June and December 1942, Luther also manufactured 43 Bf-110 F-3 reconnaissance aircraft whose MG FF / M machine gun was replaced by a RB 50/30 camera and a 7x9 handheld camera. These aircraft were not equipped with the Rüstzatz M1 or the Rüstzatz M2.

The Bf-110 E a multipurpose airplane.

The Bf-110 F - New engines.

The first "real" night fighter.

The first night fighters that arrived at the units of this type were Bf-110 C-E without the necessary instruments to help in night navigation. The first true night fighter was actually the Bf-110 F-4, which was based on an F-2 frame but equipped with an APZ 5A navigation system and a FuG 202 radar. The standard configuration of this aircraft was the Rüstzatz option M1 (two MG 151/20) in addition to two MG FF / M cannons and four MG 17 machine guns. The additional armament and the radar system decreased its maximum speed to 470 k / h at 5,100 meters.

A total of 279 Bf-110 F-4 aircraft were built by Gotha between December 1941 and December 1942.

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 G - The most numerous of the family.

In July 1942 Gotha sent the first six pre-production aircraft Bf-110 G 0 to Rechlin. By December of that year all the aircraft had been tested in Rechlin and Augsburg. These machines were based on the frame of the F-4 but equipped with DB-605 B engines, similar to the DB-601 but with greater displacement of 35.7 liters. The RPM had increased to 2,800 with 1,475 hp during takeoff (one minute) and a maximum of 1,355 hp at 5,700 meters (one minute) or 1,250 hp (30 minutes). The war situation was deteriorating the quality of the oil in Germany and at high pressures this led to fires and accidents.

The first version of this type was the Bf-110 G-2 motorized with two DB-605 B engines that propelled three-blade VDM-0-12078 A / B propellers with 3,426 meters in diameter. He was the fastest of all, reaching 595 k/h at 6,100 meters and capable of climbing up to 6,000 meters in 8 minutes. Its armament consisted of 4 MG 17 machine guns and two 20 mm MG 151/20 guns (starboard gun 350 projectiles, port gun 400 projectiles). At the rear it had a twin 7.92 mm MG81Z machine gun with 750 projectiles. As a secondary weapon, it had a 4-tube launcher for unguided rockets of 210 mm.

The serial production of the Bf-110 G-2 started in December 1942 at the Luther factory and continued until March 1944. The first aircraft were sent to the frontline units in January 1943. A total of 797 units were built of this series. During a meeting at the RLM on March 19, 1943, the General Inspector of Fighters, Adolf Galland proposed to equip all Bf-110 G-2 with the Rüstzatz M1 (2 cannons MG 151/20) and Rüstzatz M5 (4-tube rockets launcher of 210 mm) because he was convinced that only with this combination would there be any chance of knocking down the US four-engine bombers.

Hello to all :D; more.........................

The Bf-110 G - The most numerous of the family.

At the end of January 1943, the front line air units began receiving the subtype Bf-110 G-2 / R1, which had a 3.7 cm Flak 18 gun mounted in a ventral position instead of the MG 151/20 guns mounted in the fuselage. The 3,7cm cannon was mounted to one side at 90º from its normal position in a ventral stand with 66 projectiles in 11 clips of six projectiles each, stored in the sector of the gunner, who loaded the weapon manually.

At first they were used by the 4th Air Fleet on the eastern front in an anti-tank role. Soon it was realized of the airplane's vulnerability to anti-aircraft fire plus the difficult conditions of the field aerodromes located in the area. In this situation they were repatriated to Germany and in August 1943 destined to the air defense of the Reich framed in the Erprobungskommando 25, serving with the ZG 76 since the beginning of 1944. The Bf-110 G-2 / R1 was obsolete since the spring of 1944 with the appearance in large quantities on the skies of Europe of the Mustang P-51 as an escort fighter.

The firing of the weapon reduced the speed of the airplane by about 30 kph and greatly affected the stability so that the distance to achieve an effective attack was reduced to 300 meters. The stability problem was corrected by increasing the surface of the rudders.
