Ju-52 /3m Wasser

Post by phylo_roadking »

Can anyone tell me how many Junkers Ju-52 floatplanes were deployed in the Norwegian campaign?

So far I've found that the Lufttransportchef See mustered a TOTAL of 27 He 59s and Ju-52/3m Wasser as KGrzbV 108 - can anyone break this down any further?

I have found this:
Lufttransportgruppe See: K.G.z.b.V. I - III./108 (22 Flgz. He 59 u. einige Ju 52 See von F.d.L. West unterstellt
If the numbers are correct, the number of Ju 52 See in Weserübung is 5

Pak, thank's for that; looking further through Hooton, it would seem that the operations of and sorties etc. flown by He 59s FAR outweighed those of the Ju-52 Wassern. It was indeed starting to look as if the number of old Heinkels far outnumbered the Ju52 floatplanes.

Just 8./KGzbV 108 was equipped with the Ju 52 - all the rest were He 59s that had been acquired from training and KüFlStaffeln.

Originally, 10 Ju 52s were secured for service during the campaign, but others did filter in through the course of Apr - June '40.

Dag nab it - I just edited the above, pressed "save" and the system decided against my editing. So here it is again.

There were a lot more than 27 aircraft - KüFlGr 906 provided 19 He 59s alone (9 from 1./906 and a further 10 from 3./906). As for the Ju 52/3mg5e ("Wasser") the following ten were secured for service:

WNr 615 from Fl.H.Kdtr List
WNr 5609 from Fl.H.Kdtr Holtenau
WNr 5658 from FWS (See) Bug (TX+HQ)
WNr 5660 from ?
WNr 5674 from Fl.H.Kdtr Kamp (NG+BU)
WNr 5711 from ?
WNr 5745 from Fl.H.Kdtr Parow
WNr 5781 from KüFlGr 806, ased at ütersen
WNr 5790 from Fl.H.Kdtr Norderney
WNr 5801 from Fl.H.Kdtr Dievenow (SD+DY) - cashed 9 April 1940

These aircraft were supplemented during the campaign, so much so that the transport unit in Norway post invasion - TGr 20 - used the Ju 52 "wasser" almost exclusively.

Just thought that you would be interested to see a snippet from a LW soldbuch that I have in my collection which belonged to a pilot who flew the JU-52 floatplane in the Norwegian campaign.

Does the soldbuch mention what unit Hptm Adam was Staffelkapitän of - or indeed the full listing of units he served with and when?

Adam
It does list his units throughout the war and it would appear, based on the dates, that he was a staffelkapitan in a target towing unit. After the Norwegian Campaign he served in a few LW Commands and then in 1944/45 he served in target towing units for flak guns. It seems strange that such units were still in existence so late in the war considering the operational requirement for pilots and the priority for fuel. One of those he served in was disbanded in Sept 1944 with the final unit being disbanded as late as April 1945.
He also has a fairly impressive amount of awards - 7 - including the Transport Clasp in Bronze, Pilots Badge & Glider Badge.

think i've seen a picture of a Ju 52 on floats. I think it was in either. Hooten's eagle in flames or in "Sea eagles". I can dig it out if anyone wants.

They could have sent more if they were wont to do so. Bolting on a couple floats no big deal. Ones supplied to Canada in 1936 were set up for floats.

The Ju 52/1m was able to land on wheels, skis or floats.(*)

Early marks of the Ju52 were built at the factory with either floats or wheels as ordered by a customer. Only with the Ju52/3mg5e, introduced in early 1940, did the interchangeability between undercarriage types after construction arrive...and vanished again until the g10e. As it was, for SOME reason the factory had to built at source the Ju52/3mg5e Wassern used in Norway  To send more would have meant converting them first.
