Luftwaffe bases in Bulgaria

Post by Lsuglia »

Does anyone have any information about the Luftwaffe bases in Bulgaria; and/or of any notable pilots stationed there? I am particularly interested in a Captain Ralf Jurs who was awarded an engraved watch for "meritorious military service." I have this watch and am interested in any tidbits of information anyone may have. From what I know, he married a Bulgarian women and either did not leave when hostilities went against the Germans or moved back later. He died in Sofia; not sure when. Thanks, Lsuglia

Hello Lsuglia and welcome to Feldgrau!

Ralf Jurs recieved the DKiG (German Cross in Gold) on 24.06.1943 as an Oberleutnant in the Stab Aufkl.Führer Schwarzes Meer-West. Here's a link so that you can start your quest for Luftwaffe bases and units in Bulgaria...

Hello Larry!

The unit that Ralf Jurs belonged to at the time of his award; Stab Aufkl.Führer Schwarzes Meer-West, could be translated as the Staff of the Reconnaissance Leader Black See West.

Aufkl. is an abbreviation for Aufklärung which is german for Reconnaissance and the Black Sea West could mean the western part/coast of the Black Sea, i e the Bulgarian coast (or Romanian for that matter).

Krollspell Thanks again. Do you think Jurs was a pilot? Is there a place where I could find additional information as well as how he earned his award? Larry

Hello to all :D; a little more.....................

The II. Group of JG 27 (Hauptmann Wolfgang Lippert) in the Balkans...............

At the beginning of 1941, the II. Group of Jagdgeschwader 27 under Gruppenkommandeur Wolfgang Lippert was in Detmold for refreshment and re-equipment. Here the group was assigned a complete inventory of Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-7. On January 2, 1941, the group began to move to Romania. The flying association began the move on January 10th to Vienna-Schwechat, followed by the move to Bucharest-Baneasa on January 26th. On March 1, the group was finally moved to Vrba near Radomir. With the beginning of the Balkan campaign on April 6th, the group flew free hunting (freie Jagd) and bombing over the border triangle Greece - Yugoslavia - Bulgaria.
