Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Alfred Germer in the assault on the “Ouvrage de La Ferté” in 1940.

“Oberleutnant Alfred Germer used his reinforced sapper company to assault and neutralize the enemy's Panzerwerk 505 (Armored Fortress 505) located near Villy. During this action, he set his men a fine example of energetic and fearless devotion to duty. He executed his mission with surprisingly few casualties and was the first to enter the armored redoubt."

The fortification mentioned in this article was known by the French as the “Ouvrage de La Ferté”. The aforementioned action took place on May 18, 1940.

Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Peter Ulrich Frantz.

Major im Generalstab Peter Frantz (24.07.1917 † 11.03.2001) earned the Ritterkreuz on June 4, 1942 as Oberleutnant und Chef of the 16. Kompanie/ Infanterie-Regiment “Grossdeutschland” and the Eichenlaub on April 14, 1943 as Hauptmann und Kommandeur of the Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung “Grossdeutschland”. Good condition.

Knight’s Cross: “In the time period 12.-14.12.1941 Oberleutnant Frantz and his Sturmgeschütz-Kompanie played a vital role in defeating the Soviet attack against Strukowo. In total his unit destroyed 15 tanks, 1 dual-purpose anti-tank/air gun (7.62 cm) and 1 further anti-tank gun. By this action he and his Sturmgeschütze prevented the enemy from thrusting through the woods and cutting off the retreat route of German forces located both on the forest edge and further south of the Tula road.”

Oakleaves: “On the 14.03.1943 Hauptmann Frantz and his Sturmgeschütze were assigned to support the capture of Stanowoje, east of the village of Borrisowka. During the capture of the village the Abteilung destroyed 15 T-34s for the loss of 2 of their own Sturmgeschütze. However it was expected the Soviets would try to retake the village, and aerial reconnaissance reported soon afterwards that 120 tanks and 80 trucks with mounted infantry were approaching.

Hauptmann Frantz personally directed his Sturmgeschütze into position, and ordered them to hold their fire until he gave permission. Hauptmann Frantz allowed the first enemy spearhead (consisting of 18 tanks) to approach to close range before commencing his ambush. All Soviet tanks were destroyed in a blaze of guns. Hauptmann Frantz then gave his Sturmgeschütze orders to attack. Emerging from cover, they took the large Soviet tank formation in the flank and inflicted further heavy losses upon it. The Soviet attack collapsed, and at the end of the battle the Germans were able to accurately count the number of tanks they had destroyed during their enemy’s failed counterattack. This total was 43, all of which were credited to Frantz and his Sturmgeschütze.”

Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Günter Hoffmann-Schoenborn (* May 1, 1905 in Posen/East Prussia, Germany + April 4, 1970 in Bad Kreuznach/Rhineland-Palatinate).

Günther Hoffmann was born on May 1, 1905 in Posen. He only accepted the suffix "Schoenborn" on May 13, 1939. After leaving school, Hoffmann decided to become a professional soldier and joined the Reichswehr on April 1, 1924. At the outbreak of World War II, he led the 2 Battery of the I. Abteilung of the Artillery Regiment 42. As head of the Heavy Artillery Battalion (mot.) 777 he received both Iron Crosses in the campaign in France 1940. On October 1, 1940, Günther Hoffmann-Schoenborn was finally appointed Commander of Sturmgeschützabteilung 191, which bore the "buffalo" as its heraldic animal on its arms. With his commander, who had held the rank of major since November 20, 1940, the Sturmgeschützabteilung 191, took part in the Greek campaign in April 1941 and had his baptism of fire at the Rupel Pass.

Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross awarded on May 14, 1941 as Commander of the Assault Gun Battalion 191 "Buffalo", for his support of the Gruppe Ens during the breakout of the Metaxas line. Despite heavy enemy defensive fire and difficult terrain, he managed to get his assault guns into a suitable firing position to cover the Gruppe Ens attack. This support was invaluable to the group's success, allowing it to break through the enemy line and help trigger the collapse of the enemy front.

He was later awarded the Oak Leaves on December 31, 1941 for the distinguished leadership of the Abteilung from him during the advance to the Dnieper River, the river crossing and in the subsequent battle of Encirclement of kiev.

Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Alfred Müller (November 23, 1915 Kaltensondheim/Unterfranken - July 2, 1997 Münster/Western Phalia, Germany).

Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross conferred on 20 February 1943 as Hauptmann and Chef Sturmgeschütz-Lehr-Batterie 901 for his achievements as a rear commander of the 19. Panzer-Division. In this capacity, he did an excellent job of holding off the onrushing Soviets, which in turn allowed friendly infantry to retreat. In the process, his Sturmgeschütze and escorting infantry were repeatedly surrounded, but each time they managed to escape unaided, even taking other small groups of German troops with them. On February 6, 1943, a Soviet flanking attack threatened the Division's retreat route near Toschkowka. In response, Müller mustered all available troops (messengers, clerks, cooks, etc.) and launched a counterattack along with his Sturmgeschütze which drove the enemy back. His battery destroyed 16 enemy tanks in the process.

He later received the Oak Leaves on December 15, 1943 as Kommandeur Sturmgeschütz-Abteilung 191 „Büffel“ for distinguishing himself by crushing the Soviet bridgehead at Eltingen.

Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Hermann Danzer (June 25th, 1916 Vienna, Austria - June 20th, 1940 Epinal, France).

Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross Awarded posthumously on December 21st, 1940 as Leutnant and Zugführer 2. / Panzer-Pionier-Bataillon 57 / 6. Panzer-Division.

On the June 19, 1940 the 6. Panzer-Division received the mission of capturing Fortress Epinal via a surprise attack. The first part of the attack went well and managed to capture the fortifications on the western bank of the Mosel. However the defenders in the main fortifications on the eastern bank were ready for the attackers, and of six bridges leading over the river they managed to destroy four and heavily damage another. It was thus crucial for the Division to capture the last undamaged bridge over the river.

A Pionier assault troop under the command of Leutnant Danzer was dispatched to the river, however they were unable to reach the bridge itself due to the heavy enemy fire. However Danzer observed how a party of civilians were able to cross the bridge during a pause in the fighting without being fired on by either side. This gave him an idea. He put on a work coat and a hat, commandeered a driverless delivery truck and drove towards the bridge under this guise. He then jumped out of the truck and swiftly began to cut the demolition wires and throw the explosives into the river. The French eventually noticed these activities and began shooting him. A round hit Danzer in the neck, however he continued his work and continued to toss aside one mine after another.

After clearing every mine in site Danzer rushed over the bridge back to the German lines. However at the end of the bridge he was struck by another round and collapsed. A Pionier and motorcycle messenger rushed to him and brought him out of enemy firing range. Danzer would be recommended for the Knight’s Cross on the same day for this brave and decisive action, however he would not live to receive the award as he succumbed to his injuries on the next day.

Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Hermann Dahlke (February 17, 1917 Greifswald/Pommern, Germany - July 5, 1943 near Rakowo/Bjelgorod, Ukraine).

Knight's Cross awarded on March 3, 1943 as SS-Oberscharführer der Reserve and Führer 3./SS-Panzer-Grenadier-Regiment 1 LSSAH / 1. SS-Division.

The recommendation reads as follows…the 3. Kompanie, to which SS-Oberscharführer Dahlke belonged, was echeloned to the right and rear and had the mission of covering the open right flank of the attacking Bataillon. To accomplish this mission 3. Kompanie attacked the entrenched enemy on Hill 197.7 after overcoming their first attack objective (Hill 163).

Dahlke and his Zug fanned out to the left and in front of this attack. Thanks to Dahlke's energy and inspiring example, his men were able to break into the enemy position with a spirited attack and succeed in driving off the company-sized enemy force. In the further course of the attack a number of major obstacles were encountered. The result was that there was an unforeseen delay as heavy weapons and artillery observers approached. And this in turn temporarily put the Kompanien rifle in a very bad situation.

The 3. Kompanie was particularly hard hit, with its commander and only one other officer becoming casualties. Dahlke assumed command of the unit on his own initiative. Disregarding the danger to his life created by heavy enemy fire, he rallied his Kompanie to defend himself and repulsed the enemy counterattack.

Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Stuka Pilot Johann Zemsky (April 11th, 1909, Vienna - August 28th, 1942 Mal-Rosow).

During the Campaign in the West (Westfeldzug), Zemsky won both Iron Crosses and proved himself a capable and fearless leader. On September 1, 1940, he was promoted to Captain (Hauptmann) and appointed commanding officer of the II. / St.G 1. Transferred to the Eastern Front, he fought from the first day of Operation Barbarossa.

On February 4, 1942, after 300 combat missions, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross. In July 1942, during the summer battles for Stalingrad, he celebrated his 500th combat mission. During his 601st mission on August 28, 1942, Zemsky's Stuka was hit by AA fire and began to burn. He remained at the controls until his gunner had safely exited, then jumped. Unfortunately, he was already too low, so his parachute didn't fully open.

His friend and artilleryman (Bordfunker) survived. His men mourned him and buried him with full military honors near the Obliskaya Orthodox Church. On September 3, 1942, he was posthumously promoted to Major and awarded the 117th Oak Leaves (Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves).

Hello to all :D; a little more..........................

Walter Mix (December 21, 1917 - Deutsch-Krone/Pomerania - November 17, 2004 Bad Bevensen/Lower Saxony)

Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross awarded December 18, 1942 as Oberleutnant der Reserve and Chef 9./Grenadier-Regiment 174/81.Infanterie-Division.

“The Soviets began an attack on the northern part of the Demyansk corridor on 12/01/1942. Their target was the 174 Grenadier Regiment, which was located in the Ssorokino sector (south of Gorby). The objective of the assault was to cut the link of this unit with the 290. Infanterie-Division, and in the fighting that followed this objective was completed. However, on the night of 12/12/1942, III./Infanterie-Regiment 174, headed by its 9. Kompanie under Oberleutnant Mix, was able to fight through the Soviet forces and re-establish contact with the 290. Infanterie -Division. For this act, Mix would be awarded the Knight's Cross.

Later on February 22, 1944, he would receive the Oak Leaves as Hauptmann der Reserve and Kommandeur II./Grenadier-Regiment 174 / 81.Infanterie-Division.

II./Grenadier-Regiment 174 (under Hauptmann Mix) was deployed offensively as part of the Kampfgruppe Mix from November 23, 1943 in the area around Newel. When Kampfgruppe Meyer completed the capture of Chischnewo and the heights south of Lakuschki around 10:00 that day, Hauptmann Mix and his Battalion launched an attack from the left wing and after a short but hard fight (with the support of some StuG) managed to capture the villages of Kuznezowo and Naumowo, as well as hill 182.4.

On November 25, 1943, the Battalion reached the area west of Shadro Lake and from here, through a surprise attack towards Jurowo, was able to thwart an attempted Soviet counterattack. However, the Soviets tried again on January 12, 1944. The next day their attention turned to the central sector of the 81. Infanterie-Division, and they managed to wrest control of Hill 188.3 from the Grenadier-Regiment 174. Hauptmann Mix was badly wounded in the battle and was evacuated. In light of his successes during the fight around Newel, he would be awarded the Oak Leaves.
