Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Italy early 1944.

By the end of February 1944, the division's front line had been extended to the Adriatic coast. In the spring of 1944, the fighting in Italy shifted to the southern sector of the Italian front and to the area around Monte Cassino. The line in front of the division remained largely calm. Only the Grenadier Regiment 576, which was on the Liri reinforced by the II./Artillery Regiment 305 as "Group Bode", still had to endure heavy defensive fighting. At the end of 1943, the Ost-Bataillon 412 was transferred to Italy and deployed in the 305. Infantry Division, being assigned as III. / Grenadier Regiment 576.

As already mentioned, in early May, the Grenadier Regiment 576, together with the II./Artillery Regiment 305, was transferred as "Group Bode" to the Gari (the continuation of the Rapid south of Cassino) just south of the confluence of the Gari and the Liri to Garigliano. On May 11, 1944, the regiment was completely overwhelmed by the last Allied offensive around Cassino. On May 19, the regiment, suffering heavy losses, withdrew along the Liri to the Senger-Riegel Line near Pontecorvo.

Meanwhile, the "Bode Group" had been reinforced with remnants of three mountain infantry companies, the 44th Field Training Battalion, engineers from the 90th Panzergrenadier Division and the 334th Infantry Division, but only formed a collection of battered units.

While the position of the Grenadier Regiment 577, had remained largely calm. On May 11, 1944, the final Allied offensive began against the German positions at Monte Cassino up to the coast of Gaeta. On May 15, the 305th Infantry Division was ordered to replace the 71st Infantry Division on the southern section of the front at an accelerated pace, the latter having suffered heavy losses in earlier fighting.

On May 27, most of the 305th Infantry Division was thrown into the Sacco River in heavy defensive fighting. Reaching the south bank of the Sacco, the 305th Infantry Division relieved parts of the 94th Infantry Division in a line of resistance south of Ceccano and prepared for defense. During the night of May 30, after heavy fighting, the division withdrew to a new line north of the Sacco, 3 km northwest of Ceccano, facing southeast, with the right wing resting on the river.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Italy June and July 1944.

Continuing its retreat, the 305th Infantry Division straddled the Sacco during the night of June 1. As of June 16, the situation regarding the strength of the subordinate regiments was as follows:
Grenadier Regiment 576 still had a strength of 118 men, although it was reorganized to include the remnants of Grenadier Regiment 276 and was able to count on two battalions.
Grenadier Regiment 577 still had a strength of 427 men.
Grenadier Regiment 578 still had a strength of 269 men.

With heavy losses, the division, merged into a combat group (Kampfgruppe), marched north through Olévano, Affile to Subiaco and then to Perugia, where it arrived on 20 June and there a new line of resistance was established. In the period from May 11 to June 20, the division had 213 dead, 617 wounded, 659 missing and 149 sick.

In early July, the Kampfgruppe of the 305th Infantry Division was transferred to the Tasman Sea north of Perugia. In intense defensive fighting, the division was pushed into the Arezzo area from 02 to 04 July (at this point, the Grenadier Regiment 578 consisted solely of the II. Battalion). Fighting in the Arezzo area lasted until mid-July 1944.

The artillery, the horse-drawn supply columns, the medical company and the field training battalion were left behind in the Adriatic. The 305th Artillery Regiment fought in July 1944 with the 278th Infantry Division and the 71st Infantry Division in the heavy fighting of the LI. Mountain Army Corps around the port city of Ancona. The regiment's howitzers stayed behind in the Adriatic, where they made up for the losses of other formations. Upon its return to the 305th Infantry Division, the artillery regiment took over the additional weapons, personnel, and materiel of the I. and III. / Artillerie-Regiment 194. Later, the regiment was expanded to four groups (abteilungen) by new additions.

Beginning on July 17, the division defended the heights north and east of Arezzo. Starting in July 1944, the division was reorganized and the destroyed units were restored, for example the staff and the I. Battalion of the Grenadier Regiment 578, were reorganized in Ravenna at the end of July.

Hello to all :D; more.............................

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Italy August 1944.

On August 4, 1944, the British X Army Corps attacked the front line of the division between the Tiber and Arno. The Fusilier Battalion 305 stood to the west, the II. / Grenadier-Regiment 578 stood east of the Arno, then the Grenadier-Regiment 577 in the mountains rising eastwards to the Alpe di Catenaia and the Grenadier-Regiment 576 south of Monte Filetto, Monte Altuccio and Monte Il Castello. The Pioneer Battalion 305 served as a divisional reserve.

The Grenadier Regiment 577 was able to repel the Allied attack, while parts of an Indian division took Monte Filetto at Grenadier Regiment 576 and broke through the regiment's front line. The Grenadier Regiment 577 was blown up. By the evening, Monte Altuccio and Monte Il Castello had also been taken by Indian units. During August 4, the staff and the 1st Battalion of Grenadier Regiment 578 from Ravenna also met the division and relieved the Fusilier Battalion 305 from its positions.

During the night of August 5, this marched behind the Grenadier Regiment 577 and stabilized its front line. On August 5, in cooperation with the 44th Infantry Division, it was possible to seal off the enemy penetration point. Then the combat activity in the division area ebbed away again. During the night of August 10, the division's planned retreat to the green line north of the Arno began. The 305th Infantry Division retreated to Green Line II over the three nights of August 18-21. The new position stretched in a straight line from north-west of Marradi to south-east of S. Sofia and blocked the roads to Faenza and Forli.

During the night of August 27th, the Grenadier Regiment 577 was pulled out of its positions and sent to support the 715th Infantry Division, which was used to retake Monte Battaglia. After heavy and costly fighting, the regiment had to stop its attacks on August 29th. It had suffered heavy losses, the I. Battalion had to be pulled out of the front for refreshment.

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Italy late 1944.

By September 10, the division was deployed along the new defensive line. Throughout the month of October 1944 the 305th Infantry Division was engaged in heavy defensive fighting on the arc of the front south of Faenza and in November 1944 returned to Lamone near Faenza. Heavy defensive fighting broke out again in December. On December 10, the worn-out division was replaced by the 90th Panzer Grenadier Division and moved to the Imola area.

On the heights between Pidéura and Senio, the I./ GR 578, the II./ GR 577 and the I./ GR 576 came under the command of the Staff of Grenadier Regiment 578 with troops from the regiment. On December 14, these parties were hit by another Allied attack and had to withdraw behind the Senio on the night of December 16.

On December 17, 1944, the 305th Infantry Division withdrew from the front lines and was transferred to the area west of Bologna to reorganize. The division was then redeployed to the Faenza area. They took up positions on the heights southwest of Faenza on the Lamone.

During the night of December 19, the deployed parts of the division were replaced by Panzer Grenadier Regiment 200. On December 22, the 305th Infantry Division was converted to Army Group Reserve and moved into an area of accommodation 20 km west of Bologna.

Eine deutsche Division in Russland und Italien - 305. Infanteriedivision 1941 – 1945.

Actions in 1945.

In early January 1945, the division rejoined the front line and took up a position immediately southeast of Bologna, south of Via Emilia. The division's right neighbor was the 65th Infantry Division and the 1st Parachute Division was on the right. The division remained here until early April, with repeated Allied reconnaissance advances.

On April 9, 1945, the Allied spring offensive against the German positions on the Senio began. After the positions of the I. Parachute Corps were penetrated there, the division had to withdraw to Bologna on April 18. On April 19, the division withdrew behind Savena and on the night of April 21 to the plain north of Via Emilia, east of central Bologna.

Along with the 65th Infantry Division, the division continued its retreat towards the Po and was completely crushed on April 24, 1945. Only a few remaining elements were able to settle on the Po River, the mass, including the Unit Staff, marched into captivity.
