HELP FELDGRAU GROW! WRITE!

Post by Tom Houlihan »

This sticky is in direct response to another thread about helping out the site. I have gone through Feldgrau.com, looking to see what areas are missing information. While Jason has provided a considerable amount of information on Feldgrau, along with some others who have written, there is still much more information to be collected.

Below is a list of areas that Jason needs help in. None of this needs to be overly extensive. Some of it can’t be, due to a lack of readily available information. However, I know just from reading posts on this forum that there are several people here who have the knowledge to contribute in some of these areas.

If you have ever wanted to write something to contribute to Feldgrau, here is your chance. If you can’t find something interesting on this list to write about, you are too focused!

REICHSWEHR
1918-1923, Freikorps ground units

There is information needed on all Felddivisionen (Lorenz?)
As well, there are no entries for Biography of Luftwaffe unit histories 1935-1945

KRIEGSMARINE
In the section on warships, there is nothing for Torpedoboote or Schnelleboote
There are major holes in the area of Auxiliary ships:
• Kohlenschiffe
• Proviantschiffe
• Munitions- und Waffentransporter
• Tanker
• Versorger
• Wohnschiffe
• Schulschiffe
• Forschungsfahrzeug
Major holes in the landing ship section as well:
• Infanterietransporter
• Landungsprahm
• Marinefährprahme
• Marine-Nachschubleichter
• Landungsfähren
• Halbfähren
• Amphibienfahrzeuge
• Schwere Artillerie-Träger
• Leichte Artillerie-Träger
• Artilleriefährprähme
• Marine-Artillerie-Leichter
• Transporter
There are no entries whatsoever (the pages don’t even exist yet – must be placeholders) for Sicherungschiffen und Kleinkampfverbanden

Nothing at all on Naval Formations

There is plenty of room for more amplifying information in the section on Naval Ground Forces, and there is nothing at all on Marine-Sicherungs Truppen or Ersatz und Ausbildungs Truppen.

Nothing at all on:
• Verwudeten-Transport-Schiffe
• Sicherheitsschiffe
• LAZ-Verbande

There are no entries for Biography of Kriegsmarine unit histories 1935-1945

WAFFEN-SS
In the Order of Battle area, there are gaps as follows:
• Artillerie Truppen
• Nachrichten Truppen
• Pioniere Truppen
• Versorgung Truppen
• Schulen

Nothing on (some of these just need amplifying information, or a general discussion of what they were):
• SS-Totenkopf-Reiter-Standarte
• 28. SS-Panzer-Division
• Estnische Legion
• Lettische SS-Freiwilligen-Legion
• Freiwilligen-Legion Nederland
• Generalkommando XV.SS-Kosaken-Kavallerie-Korp
• SS-Gebirgs-Brigade (tartar. Nr.1)

• SS-Sturmjäger-Regiment (1. ung.)
• SS-Bataillone
• SS-Panzergrenadier-Bataillone
• SS-Gebirgsjäger-Bataillone
• SS-Schi-Bataillone
• SS-Jäger-Bataillone

• SS-Radfahr-Aufklärungs-Abteilungen
• SS-Radfahr-Bataillone
• SS-Füsilier-Bataillone
• Artillerie Truppen
• Pioniere Truppen
• Nachrichten Truppen
• Versorgung Truppen
• Sicherung Truppen
• Schulen
• SS-Heimwehr Danzig
• SS-Karstwehr-Bataillon
• SS-Wach-Bataillone
• SS-Wach-Kompanien
• 33.Waffen-Grenadier-Division der SS (ungarnische Nr. 4)

WEHRMACHTSGEFOLGE section
Several areas could use amplification, but the following have nothing:
• Deutscher Volksturm
• Deutscher Werewolf
• Organization Todt
• N.S.Kraftfahrkorps
• Deutsche Rote Kreuz
• NS-Volkswohlfahrt
• Napolas
• NSDStB

Also, some of these areas could use some more graphics, if anyone has pictures of uniforms, rank insignia, special insignia, etc.

There is much more information needed in the FREIWILLIGE section, on the following nations:
• Bulgaria
• Denmark
• Estonia
• Greece
• Hungary
• Italy
• Liechtenstein
• Montenegro
• Netherlands
• Portugal
• Romania
• Serbia
• Slovakia
• Slovenia
And someone is sure to have information that could add to the rest of the countries on the list!

There is nothing in the ALLIERTE section about:
• Bulgaria
• Finland (I know, not really allies, but Waffenbruder!)
• Romania

Most probably won’t want to admit it, but there were collaborators in every country in Europe. However, the only ones on the site that have information are Luxemburg and Norway.

Now, here’s a big one! There is all sorts of room in the FELDZÜGE section! If you’ve ever wanted to write a campaign history, here’s your chance!
These ones need to be written:
• Saar Occupation 1935
• Rhineland Occupation 1936
• Spanish Civil War 1936-39
• Austrian Occupation 1938
• Sudetenland Occupation 1938
• Czechoslovak Occuptation 1939
• Memel Occupation 1939
• Invasion of Poland 1939
• Invasion of Denmark 1940
• Invasion of Low Countries 1940
• Invasion of France 1940
• Battle of Britian 1940
• Campaign in USSR 1941-45
• Campaign in North Africa 1941-43
• Campaign in Italy 1943-45
• Mediterranean Campaign 1941-45
• Naval War in the Black Sea
• Naval War in the Mediterranean
• Naval War in the English Channel
• Naval War in the Oceans
• The Air War 1939-45

For all you collectors of badges, as well as awards enthusiasts, how about doing write-ups on the following awards (illustrations or photos would be great, as well!):
• Grand Cross of the Iron Cross
• Honor Roll Clasp
• War Merit Cross
• Crimea Campaign Shield
• Demjansk Campaign Shield
• Kuban Campaign Shield
• Lapland Campaign Shield
• July 20th, 1944 Wound Badge
• Badge for Single-Handed Destruction of a Tank
• Badge for Downing a Low-Flying Aircraft
• Snipers Badge
• Army Parachutist Badge
• Infantry Assault Badge
• Armored Assault Badge
• General Assault Badge
• Army Anti-Aircraft Badge
• Close Combat Bar
• Army Ballon Observer Badge
• Anti-Partisan War Badge

There are no entries at all for Luftwaffe badges, so have at it!

Kriegsmarine Badges:
• Sumbarine War Badge
• Submarine Combat Clasp
• Naval Combat Clasp
• Combat Badge for Small Battle Units

Nothing at all for Campaign medals, so feel free!
• Spanish Civil War Wound Badge
• Tank Badge of the Legion Condor
• Spanish Cross

For those of you with biographical knowledge, there are RK bios and officer bios that could use some assistance.

There are also areas where Jason has provided skeletal information, but there is still room for additional information. If you have amplifying information in any of these areas, but all means present it!

As things are written, this post can be updated...

Edit 1: If you write an article, send it to <[email protected]> I can collect and hold them until Jason finishes Kripo Schule. Then I'll send them all to him and he can add them. Being the pedantic type, I can also read through and do some proofreading...

Hi Tom,

I'll send you my article on the SS Blood Group Tattoo tomorow, hopefully its decent enough to be included. Also, I have searched around for some facts on the 28.SS-Pz-Div, facts are pretty scarce as it hardly exsisted, but I have got enough info to do a Feldgrau style bio page, about the same amount of info as the 26. and 27. SS-Pz-Div's, which is currently on Feldgrau.

Wouldn't mind someone with some hard info on the 28.SS-Pz-Div be able to check out the details though.

Cheers,
Jock

Great! Is it done yet?
Does Feldgrau want uniform and equipment specific related stuff?
Y'know, I honestly can't answer that one. That would be for Jason to decide. So far, there's nothing anywhere on the site in that area. I don't know if it's because he didn't want it, or just didn't get to it. Let's see what the Boss says when he gets back.

Thanks guys, and to this end I am working on a new feature that will allow users to update and/or send info regarding units and the like directly from the page in question so that it may be quickly and easily updated and included on the site. Each author who contributes will be added to the credit line, of course. The hardest part about adding user-supplied info to existing pages on the site comes in editing submission for grammer and the like. But with this new addition it should make adding new info very quick!

Or grammar, as the case may be! But, I'm guessing he did that on purpose, to make a point!

Several years ago (before the forum changed the format) I had sent two articles to cover the above quoted subjects. So far nothing happened.

Sorry for the delay, Wilhelm! I'm not sure how I missed your post, but I did.

I'll ask Jason what happened to it. Do you still have those articles?

Just a thought, but Rumania deserves much more emphasis than it has recieved in the past on Feldgrau. Whatever the end of the story, Rumania was a vital part of the German military presence in Russia and the story of her soldiers deserves to be told, just as the history of the Italian 8th Army deserves to be remembered.

Very Best,
David (P.S. Victor is as Good an historian, IMHO, as we could hope for on this period and subject and I hope he makes further contributions.)

Hello,

I might be able to help with some info on danish volunteers i Waffen-ss. Actually, I would not mind writing a section, but I must have time till sometimes in august.
I can also contribute with information on the paramilitary units organized by the germans and/or the danish nazi-party (Schalburg-corps, HIPO etc.).

sincerly,
Hans Kristian Lauritsen
