thanks for clearing up the difference between hiwi's and pow's totally agree hiwi's were trusted by the germans as you say what did they have to lose at that period of the war, they were getting fed, clothed, etc. not like the pow's, in most cases.

russian pow's do you think they could they be trusted to do that job 'unescorted i mean', as their was no love lost there between them and the germans.

i would have thought that after the russian scorched earth policy, that a great deal of buildings were not available to them, and tents were the only option left to them.

hi william have a look at the osprey series of books, they have some good books on wehrmacht equipment WW2 their are sections showing great paintings in colour of various equipment uniforms etc there should be one on this subject, my local library has at least 50 various osprey titles, if not you ca...

that is a very informative article, i have often wondered who were the stretcher bearers etc, i thought it was the divisional band (musicians) who's job it was to collect the wounded etc from the battle areas.
