Well, I should perhaps provide an example of what I view as personal bravery within the ranks of the WSS [and not only mention 'Handschar'], and that would be Paul Haussers decision to withdraw his panzerkorps from Charkov, ignoring his orders - which later lead to the 3rd battle of Charkov.

Well, is it not easy to agree with that all of the WSS consisted of brave and heroic soliders. I can certainly agree to that there were heroism amongst the ranks of the WSS, but to a higher degree than in the Wehrmacht? Because there was certainly also cowardice and low morale within the ranks of th...

The trouble was the SD (Security Service) had the same uniform and insignia as we did. The only difference was a SD patch on their sleeve and we inherited their reputation. From what I have been able to read during the years, that is the main impression that I have recieved. I would guess that the ...

I have seen those unit-names around as well, and been a bit annoyed with it. How ever, to the best of my knowledge [which may be faulty] so do some of those unit-names stand for planned WSS-formations. I would expect that in the closing months of the war, when most branches of the armed forces and t...

My guess to their added value would be that they were prioritized when it came to material, much of their early recruitment was based on volonteers [unlike the heer which used draft], and the demands to join the W-SS [in the early stages] were viewed as hard. This, along with political indoctination...

Actually, the nickname 'Panzermeyer' had nothing to do with Meyers service during the war, but had something with him falling out of a window during his school years [IIRC] and not sustaining any injuries, prior to the war.:)

To the best of my knowledge, which might be faulty, the only SS-unit I have heard of in the area of Stalingrad at that time was an SS-police batallion / abteilung. Are not aware of any Waffen-SS units however, other than 'Wiking' which were in the Caucasus at that time.

IIRC so did I read something, not long ago, that Static Infanterie Divisionen lacked means of transportation, and were mostly suited for only static defence (obviously...). However, from what I could interpret so were not those divisions created to be 3rd rate troops, but rather that they were put i...

No, the quote was not backed with a name in the book I found it in (Guido Knopps 'SS - The powerful tool of evil').

Im gonna go with Greece, and with that so do I include the 'defence' of Crete. Looking at the time the British had to prepare that island, and the aid they had from Ultra, it is embarresing that they had to evaquate the island and that they lost Maleme to Students troops. Most embarresing moment of ...

New to these forums, but I will jump right in. Based on their overall fighting-performance, primary under Steiner, I would rate 'Wiking' as the best Waffen-SS division, closely followed by 'Das Reich' and 'LAH'. From what I´ve been able to gather, "DR" and "LAH" tended to be at t...
