Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

But the German units had been brought back up to near full strength had they not? They also started out in a well supplied position and the railheads were closer. So do you take the risk of bad weather or execute when your units aren't ready and don't have a log system in place that will support th...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

Considering that the railheads moved forward throughout August and September and were able to stockpile a limited amount of supplies through Sep and this had a lot to do with the rehabilitation of the mobile units for Taifun, I say you're wrong. The mobile units were indeed in as good if not better...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

Woud I? I don't think so but then I don't have to. The following paper does a pretty good job of it. https://www.cia.gov/library/center-for-the-study-of-intelligence/kent-csi/vol6no4/html/v06i4a07p_0001.htm Some quotes in this thread are telling as well: http://www.military-quotes.com/forum/lotzen-...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

But the offense garantees that you will be expending the ammo and it also means more expenditure of fuel and wear and tear on the vehicles plus it stretches the log network. Then there's always the chance that the opposition won't attack or if they do won't attack everywhere so that supplies can be...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

Since you are the proponent of them having enough supply you should be the one proving your point. . I am the proponent of AGC not suffering from PROHIBITIVE supply problems which would prevent it from launching an offensive east towards the end of august. The successful advance south by PGR 2 in s...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

But of course you can. Which is only relevant to the topic at hand as it makes it even clearer that you don't know what you are talking about. You are the one that does not know what he is talking about as you seem to think that there is a sort of magic amount of ammo minimally needed . This notion...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

The suggested 1 Sep operation did not have this is spite of good weather and still would have failed to successfully take Moscow. AGC on 1 Sep did not have sufficient forces or adequate logistical support for the forces it did have to achieve its goals. This is hindsight, you are ignoring what actu...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

Then look at the areas taken by Guderian in Sep's Kiev operation and note the rail lines (Roslavl became Guderian's depot from which the trucks could push supplies forward from). . You have strange notions of geography. Guderians advance to the south put him far south from Roslavl. Guderian would h...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

Really? I guess they could have but it would have been rather insane to do so. Now attacking East instead of South might have had some merit but it's not just the supplly sitiuation of those two units at that point intime that determines their abiltiy to reach Moscow is it? Or maybe you think it si...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

Not very credible??? Its the facts! The railheads moved forward in August/Sep along with the Soviet attacks easing up in Sep which allowed AGC to replenish, recieve replacements of men and equipment. ugh.... It is not the facts as particularly the mobile units of PGR 2 and some of PGR 3 were...

Operational reasons determine it and any alleged logistical limitations that result from it are indeed a secondary issue.

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

Scucessful defenisve operatoins usually sustain fewer casualties and there ease the log situation as the network is usually well established including the vairuos levels of supply dumps. If your oppositoin has the force to make a heavy attack then they have the force to make an offense difficult as...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

This is what is known as a straw man argument. In general haveing an adequate supply of ammo means you have a better chance of being successful, as the adequacy of your supply system decreases (not just ammo by the way) your probability of success also decreases. It will reach a point where success...

Re: Which city should hitler have gone for on the russian front?

That one cracks me up... In spite of the Wehrmacht's preferred offensive method was envelopmet to effect the 'battle of annihilation' concept and destroy the enemy's field armies asap, we are led to believe here that a more narrow front was better for 'operational reasons'. I guess the (duh) rhetor...
