Even-handedness

I'm sure the Vatican would have helped smuggle out Allied leaders, incl. Allied war criminals, had Adolf won. Whot "justice"? The Stalinist show-trial in Nuremberg? Not that many tried there were innocent, the problem is that the countries sending the judges were pretty murderous th...

Interpretation

That was news to me as well.

But perhaps there are some interpretation about being commanded and acting in accordance with military law. If you ask most people, I'd guess they'd say that civilians, including mailmen, have no business fighting.

Beanies

I like the girl with the beanie in the photo--maybe I should participate in some reenactments.

How many women participate in such events? I've never been to one and am curious.

Sources

Just look at Antony Beevor's book on Stalingrad, p. 84-86, 128, and others. He cites orders, etc, and their implementation. Another historian is A.A. Maslov, “How Were Soviet Blocking Detachments Employed?” trans. by David M. Glanz, The Journal of Slavic [formerly Soviet] Military Studies, 9, 2 (Jun...

"Mein ist die Rache, redet Gott"

To be Christian (a true one) means leaving judgment to God. Besides, considering that the victorious Allies were led by types like FDR, Stalin, Benes etc, a Pope could certainly not feel that the winners were morally entitled to sit in judgment at lesser fry from the losers.

Pretty Girls and good wine

My favorite strophe is the second, which clearly shows Germans to be more decent than other ice-People. After all, the French sing about turning enemies into fertilizer, the English and others generally how wonderful their people is, the Star Spangled Banner about war. Many anthems probably match th...

For Shadow: Rachenputz is gut for you

To Shadow, who posted about a drink sounding like "Rats-a-Pucke." This was probably Rachenputz, a medicinal mixture of Schnapps and herbs, like Underberg. You can buy it here, for example https://www.mshosting.at/shops/uniapotheke.at/product_info.php?cPath=37_21&products_id=2329649&...

Neo-Stalinist Propaganda

So what. As they are many testimonies to the contrary, his book seems more in the vein of the nationalistic litterature of the Red Army being untainted by Stalin's crimes, :[] by omitting things.

Polish Suada

I had nearly forgotten about Torquez and his twisted (torqued?) hatred of Germans (is there something like Polish Nazis to categorize his outbursts?). Now he mentions the Ostmarkenverein. Well, it bought, at fair market prices, land that a POLISH noble was willing ta sell. Yes, they settled Germans ...

Danzig a good German city

Not really. Danzig was a German city by history and population. There was no way any German government could have put up with the its fake post-1919 (esp. as the city's population rejected it) raped "independence," just created to give Poland a stranglehold over the city through its contro...

Des chiffres et des lettres

So we get close to Munoz's 337,000 non-Germans. He must have had his numbers from somewhere. Your list already misses the divisions 19, 23, 29, http://www.feldgrau.com/wssdiv.html There were units not of division level, like the Azeri, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azeri_Waffen_SS_Volunteer_Formation...

Justice is not of this world, alas

I agree it would have been a fair treaty and avoided much grief to Europe. Even the more Frankeinsteinisch creations of Versailles--Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia, do not exist anylonger--not without costing my family great sorrow, alas. But fairness would require to go back in history, and we can't. Ju...
