While a carrier is a potent weapon; von newbie does have a point. the US was mass producing Essex carriers, and after Midway and the soloman campaigns, the Japanese didn't have a carrier avation force left. Even if the Germans had produced 5 carriers, the americans coudl have transfered up to half o...

Alot of americans get pissed off about Carius. Why? Read his comments objectively- what he is actually saying is that american tankers were to smart to fight head to head with a jagtiger in a sherman. That is pretty smart- particularly when the war is won, and you want to go home. So why get worked ...

decent overview.

Not much; I've inquired quite a bit at various different places, and just not much written on the subject.

http://www.achtungpanzer.com/articles/ir.htm Not Achtung Panzer is a decent site; but doesn't adequate separate out rumor from confirmed information. ie Its Luches section is error ridden; and the only DOCUMENTED use of IR equipment was in Hungry against the soviets. But as a base overview, its not ...

Considering the tonnage sunk by american A/c in the pacific, are you sure about that?

If you read carefully he does mention his divisions and regiment a few times; maybe 3-4.

I don't recall the precise number; but it was one of the 2x series of panzer divisions. 22nd maybe?

The picture isn't as clear as that however. Germans had pretty good field repair shops at the divisional level compared to the Soviets. Germans were generally able to repair 80% or higher of their knocked out tanks; while the russians hit more like 20-30%. --- That also understates some losses- if a...

Another thing is the guys who inspired the book were the survivors- not the newbies who do most of dying. For everyone of the newbies dying on screen, there could be 5+ that the vets just don't recall.

There is also a critical difference between a liar and being mistaken. Anglo-American troops consistant talk about every artillery round incoming as being an "88" and every tank fought againt beign a tiger. Russians frequently call every assualt gun a ferdanand. It is not that they are lia...

I'll throw my two cents. I have bought many JJF books over the past few years. Some made me think twice due to cost. Found some to have been worth it, others not. If it is a book that I want just for the read, I'll go with a softcover edition like Stackpole. If it is one that I want to add to my se...

He is quoting me, mentioning there was a mention of a report over on axis history forum.

I'll look for it over there and post the link when I find it.

Over on Axis history forum, some one references a report from Breslau to higher command that they had fixed a pair of tigers, and that was the only armor left.

Actually, German commanders generally went in the worse tank if two models were availible- his job was to direct the combat, not fight personally.

ie if you had IV longs; IIIJs with 50L42 and IIILs; the battalion commanders on up would likely be in the short IIIs.

Panther, T34 and Sherman are all up there. What matters at the strategic level is the sheer numbers you have and can support. Sherman and T34 trump any german tank at that level- the USA and Russians fielded their tanks in massive quanities, and germany didn't start war production nearly early enoug...

Learning German?

Hi After a bit of thought, I am wondering what would be the best way to get a working knowledge of German... - computer course on CD-Roms - Local college course - other ideas? Really don't care about learning to speak it, just read it. [For one thing my pronounciation in English is bad (native speak...
