The caps the troops are wearing in the second picture makes me think that they are mountain troops, but they could be M43s I guess it depends when the picture was taken.

What strikes me as interesting is wondering who took these photos and for what reasons they were taken. My guess is that they were taken to scare others off doing what these unfortunate men had done. I also think that it is important that these pictures like these are seen to stop stuff like this ha...

I think that they are mountain troops too. The bergmütze caps on the table in the top pic give it away for me. One of the officers appears to be wearing a sleeve patch, can't be sure if it is a eidelweiss though.

Hi there, I live in Auckland NZ as well. I am in the process of joining the Historical Re-enactment society at the moment.
It sounds like a interesting uniform even if it isn't 100% authentic.
