Armeeabt. Hollidt
Tessin says it became an Armee Abt. on 23 Jan 1943; Bradley's entry on Gen. Hollidt gives his command of Armee Abt. Hollidt from the same date.
It had been known as an Armeegruppe from 27 Dec 1942 (Bradley again).

Dietrich von Saucken
Thanks for sharing that. Bradley hasn't reached the S letter yet (only through L!) and Keilig doesn't mention that he was a Soviet prisoner but I assume he had to do the whole ten years until the mass amnesty of 1955.

Gen. d. Kav. Dietrich von Saucken
It could also be mentioned that when Saucken appeared in Hitler's HQ, he wore his cavalry sword in to see Hitler; it was a no-no to appear in his presence armed but he was not stopped by the SS guard. The man had courage. I'm not sure where I read this- perhaps Richard Brett-Smith's "Hitler's G...

Commissar going Republican?
Uh, Helmut, are you in Europe or what? Pat Buchanan is a Libertarian, not a Republican. And as for the Commissar selling out, it won't happen.

SS Panzerkorps
I checked the 28.11.42 OKH Gen. St. Op. Abt III schematische Kriegsgliederung and it's shown as "SS-Pz Gen. Kdo" under OB West. The scoop as to why it was named II. SS Panzerkorps when it was in existence first is that Hitler wanted to Give Sepp Dietrich's Corps precedence, in the same way...

Eberhard vcon Mackensen
There is information in the attached Canadian Army Military History weblink concerning Mackensen's philosophical disagreement with Kesselring which was the reason he resigned. See Report 20. The dates are wrong on the access page however; Report 20 covers 4 Jan to 4 June 1944. I'm sorry I can't give...

Italian unit in Jerusalem
Gee, I can't remember reading about it; I looked up Jerusalem in the index for all three parts as well as volume 5 but it wasn't mentioned- they dealt with only Sicily (vol. 5) and Italy. It may be in one of the earlier volumes on the African war which I didn't go into as I was lookin for O/B materi...

Operation Varsity
According to Charles B. Macdonald's "The Last Offensive" (US Army in World War II, ETO Series), pages 309-15, it was Straube's LXXXVI Armeekorps and 84. Infantrie Division, which the US paratroop divisions largely destroyed.
