Re: Eastern Front, Russia pics, 1941-42

Hello, Sorry for the absurdly delayed response. Between summer gardening and waiting to hear from the German entities, I have fallen behind on my research, but am back into it. Finally heard from WASt (!) and got great information about my great-uncle. He was in Infanterie-Division 206, which I have...

Re: Help with interpreting WWI military doc.

Thank you both. Marty, my apologies for not getting back to you, haven't had time to work on this project lately, but will get back to it. (wish I could work on it full-time!!) I'm guessing that the swastika in the stamp is because the document was obtained during WWII. My grandfather Horst was kill...

Help with interpreting WWI military doc.

Hi, I managed to find documentation of my grandfather's activity in WWI. He lived from 1897 to 1940, originally from East Prussia. I am able to decipher much of it, such as he was an Air Force Observer, received 2 Iron Crosses, and was wounded. Would greatly appreciate any information this forum may...

Re: Invading Poland

My great-uncle was 34 or so when he went to the Eastern Front in Russia in 1941. I think he was in reserves before that. so don't know when he joined. He was born in 1908.

Re: Group of WWI soldiers? help with translation too please

Of interest: I had also sent this photo to my 79-year-old German aunt (born in 1932) who lived in East Prussia as a child. Below is her response (pardon her sometimes broken English). This will definitely go into my book of my family, if I ever get it written!! -Cassandra "The picture are all p...

Re: Group of WWI soldiers? help with translation too please

Thank you so very much. Gefangene--that was the one word in particular that I couldn't get, and the key word of course. My grandmother grew up in GroBHerzogswalde, an "estate" of sorts from what I have learned, so I guess they had prisoners working on the farm there. Interesting. I wonder ...

Group of WWI soldiers? help with translation too please

Hi, Came across these photos from my Mom/Grandmother's archives (they were from E. Prussia). There are 2 photos of the same group: 1 is better, the other has numbers written on ink on the photo itself, with a "key" of sorts on the back, but I cannot interprete the text. I have enclosed the...

Re: Welcome to the forum, tell us about yourself!

Hi everyone, I am Cassandra, live in Maryland, USA with my husband and 3 cats. My mother, who died in 2000, was originally from East Prussia and my family fled there in the great trek of 1945. She moved to America in 1957 (I was born in 1967) and she never talked about it. I have recently come acros...

Re: German medics in WW2

Thanks, all, for the medical information. As a physician who ended up here looking for family history, the medical info is intriguing. To Guy: I had a similar q about my great-uncle was born in 1908 (and was 18 years old in 1926). He served in Russia 1941-1942 and was apparently "reserves"...

Re: Pic from WWII of 3 uniformed guys

Thanks everyone, Ah, Heer, not Herr, yes, now I understand, no worries. :-) Since Georg was born in 1908, he was 18 in 1926. Perhaps he joined the army then and received training and then was put into the reserves? I don't know much about his education, but I doubt he went to any military school. Th...

Re: Pic from WWII of 3 uniformed guys

Thank you for the cap information. That is right-on. I even found the following description online (what did we do before the internet?): "The following regulations govern the actual wearing, or carrying, of some of the more common items of uniform and equipment used by the German soldier: &quo...

Re: Pics from the Eastern Front 1941-42

Hi Linkar, My goodness!! Thank you so much. Yes, it "helps a bit." This is fantastic, it would have taken me forever to get even to this point. That he was in Heer and Wehrkreis 1 is incredibly helpful. I will peruse the maps and sites you suggested, and hopefully will get some info. I agr...

Re: Pic from WWII of 3 uniformed guys

Ok, now I see that the "wings" are typical for all Wehrmacht (d'uh on my part). I wish I could see the colors of the arm stripes, but obviously cannot. I found another website with close-up photos and will try to distinguish.

Again, though, a Herr patch and panzer unit?

thanks!
