Veterans

I would imagine that unlike the allied countries, the German veterans would not have been treated very well. I remember reading somewhere that SS or WAFFEN SS Men couldnt get pensions; can anyone confirm this?

A Good Site

Sure is a good site. I went to check it out the other day & it is still "closed for spring cleaning". Let's hope it comes back soon.

Another interesting thing was that Stalin put his own people in the gulags after the war (even veterans who had won bravery medals) for unjust reasons. For example, I read that Russians who had been over run by German forces & taken prisoner, were incarcerated in camps after the war, for "c...

Sorry, I did digress, from the topic.

The point I was trying to make was that Stalin was a bigger criminal than Hitler, yet all we (in the Western world) hear is how bad Hitler & the Nazis were. Just a point, thats all.

What you have raised here Reb is a good point. Isnt it interesting how the Allies were such big supporters of Russia during the war, when Stalin was a bigger criminal than Hitler. Then, after WW2 had finished, the Western Powers spent the next 45-50 years fighting their former Eastern European allie...

Ritter, I have checked out the Einzatsgruppen site you posted, previously; it is very interesting. I also saw an interview with a former participant, a Lithuanian soldier named Petras Zelionka (on the BBC Series The Nazis; A warning from history), which was also very interesting, giving a small insi...

I have read this in a few places, the last being in the excellent book by Panzer commander Otto Carius, Tigers in the Mud). The Russians (& the Allies) seemed to know who they were facing in battle, so one can assume the Germans were the same.

Cheers,

Craig.

Panzer Crews

The Deaths Head worn by the Panzer Crews was a death warrant for many of them (if captured), as they were assumed to be SS Men.

Probably right I guess. I gather from what I have read, that they would have know they were fighting against the WAFFEN SS & as another post mentioned, both sides were not too keen on being taken prisoner (for fear of being killed straight away). This obviously shows that the WAFFEN SS soldier's...

Hard to comment & judge on the past

It is very hard to comment & for us to judge on the past (especially nearly 60 + years later). Many of these men, in the EINZATSGRUPPEN obviously followed orders, for various reasons (ranging no doubt from them being rabid Nazi's to being afraid that if they didnt carry out the orders to kill, t...
