Yes Sid, I guess you are right; by this stage of the war, all but the most dedicated Nazi's knew the war was lost. I guess the attitudes to the former Nazi regime in 2004 Germany is a reflection of the effectiveness of this de-nazification & re-education.

Cheers,

Craig.

Sounds like it would be a good book to pick up (but I havent seen it in any book shops here or in the military book club that I am a member of). I have got Charles Messenger's book on Sepp Dietrich called Hitler's Gladiator & Michael Reynolds' book on Jochen Peiper "The Devil's Adjutant&quo...

Cheers Tom & Sid for your insights, much appreciated :D I guess it would have been easier for the rankin file Heer soldier to readjust to civilian life after the war, compared to SS men, who had been indoctrinated with the Nazi ideology, more so than their Heer counterparts. The notion of "...

Denazification

I have always been fascinated by the term "Denazification"; I wonder how it would have been possible to change people's ideals & beliefs, especially the younger Germans who'd had the Nazi ideology drummed into them, from such an early age. I would imagine that this would have been espe...

I would not have thought that soldiers of asiatic ancestry would have been considered "ARYAN" enough for WAFFEN SS recruiters. Very interesting.

Cheers Nino

Cheers Nino,

I checked out your website, very interesting. The first I knew of the Hansar Division was a picture on the front cover and story about them in the book "The Waffen SS Handbook". A very informative website, well done!

All the best,

Craig.

G'day Sid, I guess all I was trying to highlight was the fact that these things did go on, on both sides, with the German ones written about in great detail & the Allied / Russian ones not really mentioned. By saying these things, people want to label you an apologist or a nazi sympathiser but I...

Some great posts in this thread guys! It must have been sad to have those possessions taken away (especially bravery awards).

Unfortunately, as the old saying goes "To the victor, the spoils", which certainly rang true in post war Germany & Austria.

[quote="Timo"...yes, but it was captured by air (Fallschirmjäger and Luftlande). Not a single Waffen-SS unit was involved.[/quote]

Ok, I will have to look through some of my books Timo & try & find where I saw it written....must have been in Greece then.

Cheers,

Craig

Operation Marita

What is Operation Marita? I have seen it quoted here in the last couple of posts but have never seen it mentioned in print before (unless it was known as something else).

Cheers,

Craig.
