I used to post all the time in the old Soldatenheim; this is the first time in about a year I've posted. The old forum had a lot of spontaniety that this site is missing...you could post on the old forum, wait 5 minutes, hit refresh, and have 5 or 6 posts in reply. I remember all of us talking after...

I turned on the TV this morning to be stunned, once again, just as I was in 1986, and in 2001. It seems that neither America nor Israel can catch a break lately, yet both these countries seem to bounce back quick from tragedy. The Columbia exploded very close to my home town in Texas. I was not ther...

LOTR Trivia ~ Christopher Lee (Saruman) has for many years been reading "The Hobbit" and "The Lord of the Rings" Trilogy once a year. This is from the expanded four-disc DVD set of "Fellowship of the Ring", which I own and highly recommend. ~ Scott

I got something I'm not used to having, being from Texas--a White Christmas. It snowed here at White Sands more than anyone around here can remember, and it stayed around for about a week. Deep snow in the desert looks pretty unreal.

News Story ~ "Germany Lauds Majors"

'Two Allied officers were celebrated Dec. 17 for rescuing millions of documents at the end of World War II that helped relatives trace the remains of German soldiers killed across the continent. Officials unveiled a plaque in honor of Maj. Henry Steinweiler of the U.S. Army and Maj. Armand Klein of ...

The Spartans, Hannibal vs. the Romans, Mongols vs. everybody, Russo-Japanese War, Khalkin Ghol, Victorian British Army in Asia & Africa & "The Great Game", --for some reason the US Civil War has never taken hold with me, maybe its because it seems everyone around here studies it &a...

Was it possible to avoid joining the Hitler Youth?

Was it possible to avoid joining the Hitlerjugend, and did people do so? I have read that the majority of the younger soldiers in the Wehrmacht served in the HJ, and I was wondering how one would have avoided service in this organization. Was it simply a matter of choice, or would you be looked upon...

Ambrose was definitely an American patriot. Even though many are not impressed with his historical writing, he did go a long way to promote the memory of World War II veterans, such as the WWII Museum he helped found in New Orleans, and he 'popularized' history of WWII, at least from the American pe...

I loved this book! It is a little dated, since some of the 'escape tunnels' and such have been proven to be nonexistent, but nonetheless I thought it was a very fun read. The author was a journalist rather than a historian, and the story he tells is exciting. I especially liked the escape of all Hit...
