Re: Hemingway and Powalla
John, Re: HEMINGWAY shooting Pow's No offence intended or taken. I recall the message you mentioned. However, the writer provided no documentation. And as best I can remember, he was repeating what a friend told him. Things like this can spread on the internet like a forrest fire, and I just wanted ...

Re: Hemingway and Powalla
John, With respect, I have NEVER said or written that Hemingway shot and killed German POW'S. From my research, I do believe Hemingwqy killed a number of German soldiers under battle conditions. That includes the soldier from which he took the Gott Mit Uns belt buckle. Since he was there as a war co...

Re: Gott Mit Uns
John...thanks for your help and advice. basically the German soldier i am seeking was killed on or about 28-29 July 1944 in the vicinity of Villabaudon, Hambe, France. He was riding a motorcycle with sidcar (empty), and was possibly a dispatch rider. He was rather heavy-set. It is possible he was pa...

Re: Hemingway and Powalla
Well, it's back to the drawing board. I was wrong. Iit turns out. , Huberrt Powalla probably wasn't the Nazi soldier Hemingway killed to get the Gott Mit Uns buckle and belt. I say jthat after having gone to Poland where I intervied his 85-year-old brother. The soldier I am seeking was riding a motor...

Re: The Ernest Hemingway (alleged) murder of German PoWs
Oh yes...to the gentleman who says he will no longer buy Hemingway's books....In 1936, the Nazi party staged a book burning in Berlin as Goebbels the minister of Propaganda put it, the objective was to cleanse the nation of "un-German" thoughts and influence. Hemingways books were among th...

Re: The Ernest Hemingway (alleged) murder of German PoWs
I started this thread, and I am afraid some of what I said was misunderstood. I did NOT say that Ernest Hemingway killed German POW'S. i did say that at various times during the seven months he was traveling as a war correspondent wi6h the 22nd Infantry Regiment he very likely killed a number of Ger...

Brendan, Thanks very much for the Volksbund information. Unfortunately, it is much the same as what I had from the Deutsche Dienststelle. As to suggestion for finding relatives..it is not easy and you have to be determined to dig through the bureaucracy. The last search i did took me almost two year...

It is very much appreciated. I have moved my query to the discussion groups suggested...and will pursue the recomendations you made for further research....I also re-titled them Hemingway and Powalla. the GOTT MIT UNS connection has to do with the fact that Hemingway went back to Cuba with a war sou...
