Aufgesessen ...
"eine Kompanie aufgesessen zum Angriff"
If we see "aufgesessen" but tanks are not mentioned, can we assume that men were indeed sitting on tanks?
Is this term also used to describe infantry sitting on other vehicles, too?
Danke im Voraus ...

offene Feuerstellung
"Die Batterie ging in offene Feuerstellung."
I'm unclear about 'offene' in the above. Does it mean a firing position which was in the open? Or is it connected with "to open fire"?
Comments greatly appreciated.

Just picked up your post ... all noted with thanks.
About Kew, I always stay with Mr + Mrs Cellan Jones. Wonderful breakfasts and only 10 minutes' walk from the NA. (Still prefer to call it the PRO)

Re: Did US Army have War Diaries in WW2 … (?)
Well, Rich, I've struck gold before with RQs on forums ... but your reply is so comprehensive and generous! Thank you very much. I can see that the whole thing is complex. But at least I know where I am ... and so does everyone else reading this thread. It's been hard to get chapter and verse. In th...

Re: Unit histories and war diaries ...
To my shame I see that I failed to thank you for the leads. I know the BA at Freiberg but was looking at Luftwaffe stuff when there. I'll see about the book which you mention, also.
Thanks again.

Thanks, John.
Your two postings contain a lot of very useful leads. I can see that it will be quite a job, but am getting a lot of help and will report back in due course.

Re: who permit russian to take all the prisones of war in russia
My father-in-law, a Sudetan of mixed Czech and German parentage, served in the Wehrmacht. At the end of the war, he and some friends (this was on the Hungarian - Czech border) threw away their weapons and put on civilian clothes. Their aim was to go west and give themselves up to the Americans. Howe...

Did US Army have War Diaries in WW2 … (?)
I’m trying to find out about the 129th Signal Radio Intelligence Company. They were part of the 6th Army Group in the European Theater of Operations, US Army. I also have a note that the 129th was assigned to the Fifteenth (15th) Army. The company took part in the Ardennes-Alsace Campaign, and was i...

Re: What if 'Sealion' had been launched and failed ... (?)
Thank you everyone. It has been fascinating to read the interesting and detailed replies. I do still wonder what the effect would have been if the Germans had suffered a major catastrophe in the Channel ... huge casualties and a large force trapped in Britain and finally defeated. Might they then ha...

Re: What if 'Sealion' had been launched and failed ... (?)
Yes, I did mean the effect on the rest of the war. Thank you for all the interesting replies. It had crossed my mind that a failure might have resulted in a stalemate in Europe. Would Barbarossa still have been launched? Might Hitler not have contented himself with the gains already achieved? Is it ...

What if 'Sealion' had been launched and failed ... (?)
Not sure whether this has been aired before ... but what would have been the consequences of Sealion having been launched, and then having failed? Perhaps the landing craft would have been sunk by the Royal Navy and/or RAF; perhaps some units would have landed but have been forced to surrender becau...

German War Diaries - re Hyères in France ...
VMT, Christoph, for your reply. I had feared that the situation might be as you say. In Britain, we are more fortunate because there’s a good collection of War Diaries at the National Archive. I was even able to find Canadian War Diaries when researching the Canadian Army in Eastbourne during the Se...

Unit histories and war diaries ...
Did German units keep War Diaries, as did British forces? Are they readily available at Freiberg? I am wondering whether I can find out about units based at Hyères (Var) in France during the occupation. Various local historians have described the situation from the French point of view. I would be i...
