i believe the germans and russians were the main armies to keep snipers throughout both wars and the peace, and there fore had quite advanced training/ tactics.
apparently the british kept them from the first ww but not not to any great extent.
the US completely abandoned the concept of the sniper and had to hurridly re instate them in the early 40s. they still remained "sub class" untill fairly recenty and the first MOH issued to snipers in the "black hawk down" saga.
so russia was where the sniper wars took place. i take it you have seen the film "enemy at the gates"? i have read several differing articles on whether or not that actually ever happend but it does show that snipers were used extensivly by both sides. the german sniper rifle i believe was the standard K98 with snipers scope...

As I understand it, the USMC did continue sniper training between the wars but not the US Army. The British had very effective snipers in WWI (eventually) using special units such as the Lovat Scouts (the ghillie suit being one of their innovations), but in WWII they were used for the occupation of the Faroe Islands so can't have had much impact on the European battlefield!

The nRussians had a large number of trained snipers, using an upgraded "sniper" version of the standard Mosin Nagant rifle made in large qualtities; The breech mechanism was more precisely machined for a better gasproof seal, and of higher-grade steel.
