Tom, I think it probably has been, I found it on the Net again, but I'd read it before over the years so I assume in print. There' several "collations" like that about.

9. What was the war about?

a. Racism

b. Communism

c. Boston tea

d. Liberation of Europe and the Pacific

uhh... liberation? sure, it happened, but WW2 wasn't about 'liberation', it was about stopping the super evil dudes.

and reminds me... another thing that pisses me off... at my school, it is an insult to call somebody a 'Jew' :roll: @{

More so if they're not, I assume?

Why is it an insult? Is "Jewish" the more preferable term? I honestly don't know, I'm asking...

Hi Reb,

Napoleon didn't win at Waterloo. Waterloo is a song performed by the swedish group Abba in the 70's. This song was so famous that England decided to give its name to a railway station. The famous Waterloo station. :D

So long.

I once had a phone call from a chap who wanted to write to our office.

"Navy News"
"Yes, Navy News"
"HMS Nelson"
"HMS?"
"HMS N E L S O N"
"Melford?"
"N E L S O N"
"Melford?"
"N E L S O N. Famous admiral."
"Melford?"
"N E L S O N. You may have heard of him. He won at Trafalgar..."
"Truffle?"

At that point I gave up...
In his honour, the great Horatio is known now in our offices as Melford. :D

Hi,

It's been a while since I posted here. Had to take care of a few things in my life. The sad thing is that common knowledge can be pretty bad. I recently overheard some coworkers disparaging the French in WWII, the usual condescending nonsense of the French supposedly being easy conquests.

I suggested that they actually read the campaign histories of 1940. Of course, they just kept on bad mouthing the French and refused to actually test their idea. Also, about three years ago, another coworker ( a young lady. ) with whom I was talking to over current events had expressed confusion. I had used the phrase, " What with the war on. " and she asked me, " What war ? "

This one is the one that really bothers me. I read a newspaper article in which a poll was taken of recent high school students. ( As of 2004. ) The poll had asked the kids:

Which countries were U.S. allies in WWII?

A: Britain

B: Soviet Union

C: Germany

D: Japan

The answer:

Surprisingly, a full quarter of our kids thought that Germany and/or Japan were our allies.

Sometimes, I worry about the human race.

Cordially,

huh, i understand that comment now Tom...

no, it's like calling someone stupid or something. just an insult. and if someone finds something repugnant or stupid or whatever they sometimes say 'that's so Jewish!'. i'd correct them if i wouldn't get yelled at for it.

they say children are the future... oh my, we're screwed.

Hi Tom,

You might have a point, if it wasn't for the fact that the internet is, if anything, worse. We have our own share of the ignorant and the deliberately misleading here on Feldgrau.

Cheers,

Sid.

You wouldn't dare to call someone a jew as an insult in Europe. Well, at least not in Austria or Germany that is. You can get in serious trouble.

My girlfriend, god may forgive her for I won't, once asked me shocked: "We were Germans?" I looked at her and waited for a while because I wasn't sure if she was trying to pull my leg. She didn't.

You can believe me that I had some serious trouble to fall asleep that night. Thats how women listen to you when you talk about something that is important to you.

I was such a "villain in an James Bond Movie" the next two days. After that I forced her to watch "Der Untergang" and "Stalingrad"

perhaps ( i can't see a remotely respectable adult present him/herself in such a manner) that's so, but to me they're more like rather ignorant/uneducated 15 year olds. oh wait... they are.

uhh...
