Red Army POW's in Wehrmacht

My grandfather was in Red Army from late 1941 to 1943. In 1943, he was a POW and working in a coal mine ( I don't know where was it by the way). He was an Azerbaijan Turk (as I am). When he was alive, he used to tell me that Germans were forcing Red Army soldiers who weren't Russian (Turk, Uzbek, Georgian etc.) and powerful also, to fight against Russians in German infantry battalions. My grandfather too, fought in German uniforms against the army once he was serving. I would like to have information about this matter, especially where and when Germans used these soldiers. He had been in countries like Hungary and Italy, but I don't know where exactly he was as a Wehrmacht soldiers. Thank you.

In Ospreys Axis Cavalry in WW2 the book states that a German commander sugested using captured Cossacks to escort POW's to the rear. Suprisingly the Cossacks returned asking for a new assignment!
