Re: Mystery German Fighter Hero - Hilfe?
This is so improbable that it doesn't sound the slightest bit true to me. Hamburg wasn't levelled by the USAF, but by Bomber Command in operation "Gomorrha" in July 1943.

Re: Questions about an Oberleutnant Zur See.
But the entry in the Marinearchiv Forum that you mentioned earlier says that G.W. Schmidt was still commanding UJ 2209 as an Oberleutnant in September 1943.

I. / Rgt. Wahn, Sich. Btl. Munster and Sich. Btl. I./VI were all integrated into 84. ID and thus dissolved.

Re: Questions about an Oberleutnant Zur See.
I only found that UJ 2209 (formerly the french Minerva) belonged to 22. U-Jagd-Flottille and was sunk in an allied air attack on Livorno on 16 March 1944. I don't know if Schmidt was still the vessel's commander.

Re: wolfslucht 2
Hitler was in Wolfsschlucht (or Wolfsschlucht 1) near Bruly-de-Pesche for three weeks during June 1940. He was in Wolfsschlucht 2 near Margival only on 17th June 1944 during the normandy battle. http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolfsschlucht_1 http://www.wehrtechnikmuseum.de/Forschung/Wolfsschlucht2/wol...

Re: Walkure, Gneisenau, Blucher
As far as I know, "Gneisenau" was the successor to "Walküre" after that operation had been "misused" by the 20th July conspirators. "Walküre" and "Gneisenau" concerned the mobilization of Ersatzheer units, while "Blücher" (the companion to ...

Re: too fat to fight
Until now, 8 Hernandezes, 11 Ramirezes and 6 Sanchezes have been killed in Iraq. So I don't think a WASP should look down on them. As a stout Catholic, I have no problem with the growing percentage of Latinos in the US, but it would be rather inconvenient if I would have to learn Spanish in order to...

Re: too fat to fight
Well, I didn't count that because the US declared war on Britain and in fact launched an unsuccessful invasion of Canada.

Re: too fat to fight
The problem is, no one ever tried to invade the US since it came into existence in 1776, while the US has invaded 47 smaller countries since then.
P.S. I'm sorry, since you are a Reb from Atlanta, I should have counted Sherman's march to the sea as an invasion.

Re: too fat to fight
The "mainstream media" in this country is overly liberal, and will do their level best to denigrate and slur the military. Well, maybe you're right, but considering the start of this thread, the neo-con press also will do their level best to denigrate and slur Germany. Quality journalism ...

Re: too fat to fight
I beg your pardon, but I was only quoting from mainstream newspapers and TV networks, some of whose headlines during the last year were: "Double number of ex-cons join the army" (rising number of recruits with felony convictions, even for child abuse) and "US Army lowers recruitment s...
