Dear Quist, first of all, according to Gen Krivosheev in his book " "soviet Casualties and combat losses in the twentieth century", Soviet suffered about 21 million causalties between 1942-1944 (1942: 4308094 1943: 7080801 and 1944 6503204) not 22.1 million, but this number included ...

The ger numbers I´ve been using should not come as a big suprise since numbers very similar to this already exist on this site. Under herr stats and lossses. Which are certainly the more offically accepted numbers than Overmans study.

If you want to count just combat deaths against combat deaths then you have made a few errors. Including the post Apr 45 german deaths in the rus NKVD camps is a no no this figure is mostly post surrender as well. Also including All 1945 dead and missing from what ever source such as the 4 mil ger p...

Re: Battle of Normandy - 1944

I am interested in reading some books about the Normandy battles in 1944 and would like some recommendations. As I like to have a "balanced" description, I would appreciate receiving comments about books that also provide a good perspective from German side. Thanks in advance! Cheers, Chr...

Hi Sam, yes, it is staggering, and Walter Dunn in his book "Hitler's Nemesis" pages 54 to 56 estimates that in 1941, Germany had 17.2 million men of the ages from 19-45. Of course not all of these men were fit for service. However, the equivalent Russian figure for 1941, ages 15-50 is 46 ...

And although not directly related to stalingrad the ger army did not actually do any major demobilization after france. Actually although certain divs and peole may have been demobilized or released there was proably a net increase of almost 50 divs bettween may and the end of 1940 alone.

Of course the ger lost about 250,000 troops at stalingard which was also about 10% of the army str on the east front. But they recovered at least 40,000 of those troops wia and specialist flown out. Also it wasn´t 90,000 POWs but 90,000 mia some of which may have died before capture. And if you look...
