I don't think that high muzzle velocity is bad for indirect fire. The ZIS-3 was also commonly used in that role. Yes it was but the Soviets tended to do direct fire as opposed to indirect fire with their arty. Or am I mistaken? The rus fired up to a third of all thier ammo in the direct fire roll.
